Pallet Management Services

Pallet is a type of advanced packaging, it is a flat structure which is used as a base for unitization of various transports, stored through the supply chain. The very basic purpose of pallets is to help stack, store, protect and transport goods in the supply chain during transportation as they are handled through forklifts, jacks or conveyors stored in racks, or in bulk.

Pallets are also defined by the style such as single or double face, reversible, non reversible. Different types of bottom deck configurations are also considered in pallet style. A single faced pallet is also commonly called a skid.

How Pallets came into existence?

Pallets were one of the key logistics developments to emerge in the 20th century and continued to evolve over the past century. The introduction of pallets has enabled the development of modern logistics to its current phase in a long way. Pallets are significantly considered important for supply chain management as they allow efficiency improvements in the handling and transport of unit loads versus the loose stacking of goods.

Considerations for Pallet Selections

One important factor to be considered while selecting pallets for use of whether they are reusable or not? Reusable pallets cost lower as a one time expense can cover many trips. The environmental effects of reusable pallets are great compared to expendable pallets. Reusable pallets are considered good investment for supply chain business as a quality pallet works longer, which returns lower cost per use.

Pallet Pooling and Management

Pallets can be classified as block or stringer pallets. Block pallets allow a full four way entrance in the transport vehicles. Stringer Pallets are also of two types , one with solid stringers which allow only two way entry with forklifts attached to each end of the pallet. The second type is notched stringer pallets which somewhat allow a four way entry as forklifts can be attached to the notches as well the ends of the pallet.

Pallets are also for rent or hire and are known as Pallet pooling. This system of pallet exchange became heavily popular since inception in the years after world war 2. While renting, pallet users can have the high quality uses of the pallet while saving the cost to buy and only paying for the use. This can help to reduce the harmful effects of expendable pallets on the environment followed by completely displacing the need to use them. Reusable pallets can provide low cost per-trip, eliminating waste and operational efficiencies throughout supply chains.

Emerging Trends in Pallet Management

The upcoming trends and developments for pallets include to remove the excess weight and material of them while not compromising with their performance. In today's time, pallets are impacted by concerns related to personal and food safety. Emphasis is also laid on appropriate handling, storage and cleanliness.
